Spanish Football Stopped for De Miguel’s Tragic Death
1. Overview
At 8 a.m. local time on November 3, 2026, Jesús de Miguel Alameda (30), a forward for CD Tenerife in Spain’s second-tier professional football league (LaLiga 2), died in hospital after colliding with the opposing goalkeeper during a match. De Miguel fell after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in stoppage time of the second half of the 2026–27 season’s 12th-round match between Tenerife and Andorra. He was taken to intensive care after suffering cardiac arrest, but his neurological condition worsened and he eventually died.
After news of his death emerged, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) suspended all Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches scheduled for November 3. Major clubs and players, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, also expressed their condolences. Meanwhile, the incident, in which the goalkeeper’s knee struck De Miguel in the chest, has reignited debate over the limits of protection afforded to goalkeepers.
2. The Incident
The incident occurred near the end of a match at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. The Korea Economic Daily reported that it happened on the 1st, while FourFourTwo and SPOTV News gave the date as the 2nd. Although the dates differ, the 2nd appears more likely when considering FourFourTwo’s report that De Miguel’s condition became critical “in less than a day” and the Korea Economic Daily’s report that he was pronounced dead “a day after” the incident. The score was 2–2, and Tenerife were looking for a winning goal on the counterattack in second-half stoppage time. El Confidencial reported that the incident occurred in the 96th minute.
According to the Korea Economic Daily, De Miguel chased a ball that had entered the opposing half and collided forcefully in midair with Owono, who had run out of the penalty area. Owono’s knee reportedly struck De Miguel in the chest. De Miguel clutched his chest and lost consciousness. The referee immediately sent Owono off and stopped the match. El Confidencial reported that Owono appeared to move toward his fallen opponent, but ultimately left the pitch.
Medical staff rushed onto the pitch to provide emergency care, while players from both teams were left in shock. SPOTV News reported that some players were seen crying as treatment continued. De Miguel was taken away on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to the nearby Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria.
3. Hospitalization and Announcement of His Death
Reports differ slightly on when De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest. The Korea Economic Daily said he went into cardiac arrest on the pitch and received emergency treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation. SPOTV News, citing Spanish outlet Marca, reported that he suffered cardiac arrest during transport and was revived by paramedics using CPR. A Reddit post also said that the collision caused cardiac and respiratory arrest and that he was rushed to an ambulance. In any case, he was in a life-threatening condition immediately after the collision.
Soon after the incident, Tenerife announced that De Miguel had been admitted to intensive care and was in serious condition. His pulse reportedly returned and his condition seemed to improve for a time, but the club soon issued an update saying that his neurological condition had deteriorated rapidly. FourFourTwo likewise reported that he briefly improved thanks to the medical team’s swift response, but that a correction was later issued saying his “medical condition had worsened neurologically.” De Miguel died at 8 a.m. on the 3rd, and the club announced his death in an official statement.
In its statement, the club said, “We are plunged into deep sorrow and can hardly believe this is true,” adding, “There are no words of comfort.” It thanked supporters for their messages and asked that the family’s privacy be respected. De Miguel was born in 1996 and came through the youth system at CD Leganés. He helped Castellón earn promotion to the second division in 2023, then joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025 and had been playing as a regular starting forward.
4. Spanish Football Suspends Fixtures and Pays Tribute
Following the tragic news, the RFEF suspended all Copa del Rey Mapfre first- and third-round qualifiers and Copa de la Reina Iberdrola first- and third-round qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, as a gesture of mourning and solidarity. An official presentation for the U-21 national team’s match against Japan, which had been scheduled to take place in Almendralejo, was also canceled. FourFourTwo reported that the rescheduled fixtures would be announced at a later date. The RFEF added that Spanish football stood united in the face of this sad loss and extended its deepest condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends, Tenerife, and its supporters.
Tributes also came from clubs and players. According to the Korea Economic Daily, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid issued official statements, while former footballer Gerard Piqué, a majority shareholder in Andorra, also offered his condolences to the family. SPOTV News reported that Barcelona’s Pedri wrote, “I’m lost for words,” and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé said, “There are no words to express it.” Lee Kang-in also posted a tribute, while English Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool sent messages of condolence. Photos were also released showing Tenerife players Jorge Moreno and Jesús Álvarez visiting the hospital.
5. Authenticity Debate
The central question is whether the collision was an unavoidable accident resulting from an instinctive defensive movement by the goalkeeper, or a dangerous play caused by a misjudgment. El Confidencial noted that the incident had reopened the longstanding debate over “how far goalkeeper protection should go, and at what point it becomes recklessness for other players.” No reports have claimed that the collision was intentional.
5.1. The Case That It Was an Unavoidable Accident
This view holds that goalkeepers raise a knee when challenging for an aerial ball to protect themselves. Experts quoted by El Confidencial also explained that “goalkeepers raise their knees to protect themselves.”
The urgency of the situation is also cited in support of this view. It was stoppage time, the score was tied at 2–2, and Tenerife were pursuing a winning goal on the counterattack. Owono had come out of his own half toward the center of the pitch to clear the ball and stop the attack. Reports that Owono appeared to move toward his fallen opponent even after being sent off may also be taken as evidence that the incident was not intentional.
5.2. The Case That It Was a Misjudgment and Dangerous Play
The opposing view focuses on the action itself rather than its outcome. A key argument is that experts acknowledged the knee-raising motion was intended for protection, but also judged that “Owono miscalculated.” Even if the explanation that it was a defensive movement is correct, the argument goes, a knee striking an opponent in the chest and leading to cardiac arrest means the movement exceeded the bounds of safety.
The referee’s response is also cited as evidence. The referee sent Owono off immediately after the collision, and El Confidencial reported that it was a straight red card. Some see this as an indication that the referee had already judged the play to be dangerous. Owono had also come out of the penalty area and run toward the center of the pitch.
Both arguments rely on reports and expert comments from immediately after the incident, rather than video analysis or the findings of an official investigation. In the absence of any confirmed official determination about how the incident occurred, the question remains open.
